Poker has seen a massive increase in popularity among players in recent years. While in 2002 the unofficial World Cup played “only” 631 players in Las Vegas, last year it was 7,874 players, more than 12 times as many, and in 20007 there were even 8,773 players. The rise in the popularity of poker was mainly due to the advent of the Internet, which allowed players to play from the comfort of their homes whenever they wanted to.
WHY IS POKER SO POPULAR?
One of the main reasons for the popularity of poker as a card game is its amazing diversity. There is no routine, commonplace and dullness in poker, each round you play with different cards, with a different board, against opponents who perform different actions. In a standard non-casino poker game, you are not playing against the machine, but against the real players who are mistaken, they make mistakes. Poker is a game of right decisions and luck, if you make good decisions and are lucky, you win. Poker can be very lucrative, in the biggest tournaments, hundreds of thousands of euros are being fought and dozens of players are playing professionally in Slovakia.
RULES OF POKER
One of the most beautiful things about poker is the relative simplicity of the rules, especially the variation called Texas Hold’Em, which is now very popular. You could say that this is a simpler version of poker, because in this variation, the player gets two cards in his hand, he keeps track of the new cards that appear on the table and possibly raises bets or folds in case of unfavorable development. your cards and doesn’t play anymore. That’s the basis you need to know, and basically you can play poker games now. Pretty good, isn’t it?
There are five new cards on the table during the entire round, which players do not take or exchange in any way, just watching possible combinations of cards on the table together with the cards they hold in their hands. The goal of the game is to have the strongest possible combination of cards. Below you will learn the sequence of different combinations and which will beat the other in one poker game.
In the game, it is important to know in detail all possible card combinations, to monitor the teammates’ behavior as they raise bets or whether to fold, and to decide whether the cards we hold are really strong and there is a chance to win or prefer not to continue, that the opponent has stronger cards on his hand.
For each new round, two players are required to place a minimum bet even if they have not received very favorable cards on their hand and would not like to continue this round. These bets are called “blinds” and provide some dynamics in the game, as they do not allow the players to just sit idle and make no bets at all times. These two players are not elected randomly but go ranked as they sit and the amount of these bets usually increases over time.
There may be different limits on the amount of bets – some are strictly defined and players cannot make larger bets such as $ 10. As a result, various bluffing tactics can be avoided . In other games there are limits to the total pot (also called “pot”) that is currently on the table and in some games there is no limit on the amount of betting, so players can bet up to the total amount they have on their account. However, this is not recommended, even if it is a tempting and highly risky move that can earn you a huge win but at the same time can deprive you of everything and the game is over for you. Therefore, be careful with bets and always consider them well.
As we have already mentioned, the player with the strongest hand combination wins in poker. In the case of a Texas Hold’Em variation, the player also counts on the cards on the table. There are the following possible winning combinations:
Highest card – if none of the players has a hand, the player with the highest card, such as an ace, king or queen, wins. If both players have the same card, the second highest card they have is decisive.
Pair – A pair of cards always counts as a combination of the highest cards possible. I.e. if one player has two kings but the other player has two aces, the player with two aces wins. If both players have the same pair, the player who has another higher card wins. But in the Texas Hold’Em version, if they have no other card besides the pair, they count as a draw and share the pot together.
Two Pairs – Two pairs of cards that follow rules similar to one pair. I.e. wins the player who has the pair consisting of stronger cards, or if both players have the same pair, the player with the highest card wins.
Three of a kind – three of the same cards, but there must be no other pair of cards in the game, since such a combination would already form a stronger combination called a full-house. In Texas Hold’Em variations, multiple players may have a triple at the same time, in which case the player holding the highest card wins again.
Straight – or straight. This is the case when a player has at least five cards of a different suit on a straight. If the cards are of the same suit, it is a so-called straight flush and this combination has more power.
Color – or also called “flush”. It is a combination where the player has five cards of the same suit but the cards do not have successive values, because in this case it would be the mentioned straight flush.
Full House – the player has one triple and one pair of cards at the same time. If two players have the same three of a kind, it is decided who has the bigger pair.
Four of a kind – four of the same cards, also known as “poker”. If two players have a quad at the same time, the one with the higher cards wins.
Straight Flush – A player has a straight flush on his hand if he has a straight flush consisting exclusively of one and the same suit.
Royal Flush – this is the strongest possible hand in poker. This is a straight flush, which consists exclusively of ace, king, queen and joker spades.
